Well There Goes My Domain Name … Crypto.com … Cryptography or Cryptocurrency?

Well, we all have a domain name we would love … liverpool.com, cats.com … for me it would be crypto.com. So after years of its owner — Professor Blaze from the University of Pennsylvania — saying that it wouldn’t be sold, it has just been sold. Up to now the top values for the domains have been:

Insurance.com $35.6 million Sold: 2010
VacationRentals.com $35 million Sold: 2007
PrivateJet.com $30.18 million Sold: 2012
Internet.com $18 million Sold: 2009
360.com $17 million Sold: 2015
Insure.com $16 million Sold: 2009
Fund.com £9.99 million Sold: 2008
Sex.com $13 million Sold: 2010
Hotels.com $11 million Sold: 2001
Porn.com $9.5 million Sold: 2007
Crypto related: eth.com $2 million

The crypto.com domain was first registered in 1993, and had many cryptocurrency companies interested in taking over the domain. It is thought, in the end, that it would have fetched somewhere between $5 million and $10 million. Recently the eth.com domain was sold for $2 million, but has yet to be used for a web site.

The company that bought the domain is Monaco — a Swiss-based cryptocurrency debit card company, and who are now rebranding as “crypto.com” [here]:

Prof Blaze actually believes that crypto stands cryptography and not cryptocurrency. For me, I strongly agree with this, and that when I use the term “crypto”, I use it as a shortened form of cryptography.

Here is what it looked link when it was first registered [here]:

and by 2005 — the peak of its activity — it looked like a typical academic Web site of the time (and which provided basically a bulletin board for news and activities) [here]:

and just before it was sold it was just a redirect to [here]:

If anyone is interested in asecuritysite.com or cloud4health.com, just get in contact with me :-)

To me, crypto means cryptography, but I guess that crypto.com will end up supporting cryptocurrencies. If you draw a Venn Diagram, cryptocurrencies would be contained fully within cryptography.
