How Much Does It Cost To Make a Web Site These Days?

I was fairly shocked to read this headline:

I’ve created a few Web sites in my time, and ones which have 100s of thousands of users, and I know that it’s not too difficult these days. We have cloud resources at our finger tips and can scale up and scale down when we require. We can also store massive amount of data in Cloud systems, and all of the tools are there to produce dynamic and highly usable Websites. In fact, the simpler the Web site, the better. The JavaScript helping at both the front end and back it, you can build a fairly advanced Web site in just a few months.

The UK Army Web site was handed over to Capita in 2012, and its release was delayed by 52 months … yes … over four years. and was three times over budget … and came in at £113 million. The ten year deal is worth £495m, and, since it was launched in Nov 2017, has failed to actually achieve it targets for recruitment. For applicants, the wait can take up to 321 days to even start basic training.

We need to start thinking about how we support innovate SMEs better in our economy, and make sure that they have increased opportunities to apply innovative solutions. For many of the companies I know what love to get even a fraction of the £113 million contract, and end up producing something that would deliver both on-time and which used innovation at its core.
