Finally! Perhaps our governments will do something when a leading business leader tells it as it is?

After years of trying to push forward computer science in Scotland, the subject at school is struggling to make any impact. In fact, this year the numbers taking the subject dropped, and it is in danger of being overtaken by Woodworking:

So, the jobs of the future are in technology, but still, we fail to see Computer Science as providing a foundation for our future? With Apple, Google, and Facebook becoming world leaders, where are our leaders going to come from? But now things might change, as a report from Mark Logan pulls no punches [here]:

Mark wants Scotland to produce a world-class technology innovation infastructure, but how can you, when you switch so many kids off computer science at such an early age. Mark nails this viewpoints straight, and just comes right out as says it as it is:

And then focusing on the 80–90% male dominance:

And, of course, we are just not telling our kids that the jobs of the future will involved software, cybersecutity and data science:

And it’s not a big secret but the level that those with a Computer Science qualification at school get to, often means that we just teach the basics again:

And his conclusion:

that Computing Science should be considered as equal to other sciences or mathematics in the school curriculum.

Yes! The world is changing, and we need to change our education system to produce those who understand technology, and not just use it. The knowledge of how TCP/IP works (aka The Internet) is probably just as important as Newton’s Laws.
