ConfigurationDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allows for the transmission of configuration information over a TCP/IP network. It is based on the Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) and adds additional services, such as: Automatic allocation of reusable IP network addresses; and Additional TCP/IP configuration options. It has two components:
DHCP has been fully defined in the following RFCs:
DHCP uses a client-server architecture, where the designated DHCP server hosts (serv-ers) allocate network addresses and deliver configuration parameters to dynamically configured hosts (clients). The three techniques that DHCP uses to assign IP addresses are:
Networks can use several of these techniques. DHCP messages are based on BOOTP messages, this allows DHCP to listen to a BOOTP relay agent and to allow integration of BOOTP clients and DHCP servers. A BOOTP relay agent or relay agent is an Internet host or router that passes DHCP mes-sages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers. DHCP uses the same relay agent behav-ior as the BOOTP protocol specification. BOOTP relay agents are useful because it eliminates the need of having a DHCP server on each physical network segment. Some of the objectives of DHCP are:
We can configure DHCP with: > en # config t (config)# ip dhcp pool wyoming (config-dhcp)# network 249.189.108.0 255.255.255.254 (config-dhcp)# dns-server 249.189.108.58 (config-dhcp)# netbios-name-server 249.189.108.61 (config-dhcp)# lease 3 (config-dhcp)# default-router 249.189.108.87 (config-dhcp)# exit (config)# ip dhcp excluded-address 249.189.108.26 (config)# ip dhcp ping timeout 350 |
